Surf Locations (SL)
I was travelling in a cab and accessing e internet. I had 3G access (not just gprs) 100% of e time. This should be useful for individuals that rely on their phones for map directions and need a continual stream of data. I would be keeping track of locations tat has 3G access and those who doesnt.

My Starhub bill just came in not too long ago, and the data counter was at a low 19MB. So if u r wondering how much data u would be using when u sign up, just compare my usage patterns and data applications that I have installed on my Nokia phone.

I was quite surprised that I could not even choke up 1GB worth of usage on my Gee! plan. Currently I use my mobile phone as the platform which is probably the reason why the data usage is low since text and images r all lower resolutions. I do believe if u use a laptop as the platform, the data usage would increase at least ten-fold, if u r one such users, please leave a comment.

Golden village on Opera

Front page for GV

Buying Tickets (update: able to buy tickets via E61i on Opera)

selection lists.jpg

E front page of Golden Village’s website looks and performs fine on Opera’s browser. You can select your movie/cinema from the drop downs.

U do hav to go through one step at a time to make the drop downs work.

  1. Click on e first drop-down list (‘Select Cinema’) and make ur selection.
  2. Next select e second drop-down for e film that r currently showing in tat cinema
  3. Heres e part tat most ppl will be frustrated by. After doing 1. And 2., u hav to wait about 1 sec b4 u can actually select e ‘Choose a day’ drop down. U can actually see e selection box shift like 1 pixel to e right after its activated (probably manually aligned?). It will be e same thing for e last drop-down ‘Choose a time’.

choose a time

After these selections, you will be brought to the seats selection page.

As you can see, due to the way Opera Mobile works, the seats are all arranged vertically instead of the normal horizontal rows. (for your info, Row A is closest to the Screen). [If you are using a different phone and could not get this to work on your phone, please drop me an email so I can update this post]

Also, if you do not use the drop down list @ the homepage to book the tickets, instead clicking on the “Buy Tickets” buttons, you will see that the timings will be all “cut” and arranged vertically. (see picture) Still works, just troublesome to find the required timings.

I really hope Golden Village is paying attention here and provide Opera mobile users an alternative way to select the seats.

Alternative Method

Use the default Nokia browser. It works, just that the amount of data downloaded from the website goes up. Meaning if u r not on a unlimited data plan, ur cost of visiting the website goes up as well. And u have to do plenty of side scrolling to get to some buttons compared to Opera mobile’s vertical scrolling.

Verdict: No Opera Mobile for GV.

I was on e NEL train to Dhoby Gaut and trying to access the internet on my Opera. It wasnt that good, i had intermittent access to GPRS (not 3G) and had to manually retry when e train reaches e station.

Maybe e upcoming wireless@SG in trains will provide me w an alternative access point.

I have been with Starhub(Singapore’s 2nd largest mobile carrier) for quite a few years and is quite satisfied w their level of service and pricing plans. As im also a subscriber for their MaxOnline(broadband internet) plans, i get to enjoy 50% discount off e Gee! mobile data plan. It costs $72 cool dollars w/o any discounts and I doubt most will sign up for that plan without any work related reasons. Even @$36, i feel a pinch. Reasons? Cost vs Experience is not near equal. (no surprise here)

After being on the plan, I realise I actually use my home’s fixed line internet lesser! From my mobile, these r the core things i do

  1. Reading and replying emails : replies are mainly non-attachment based
  2. Blog reads via Resco News and Opera Newsfeed
  3. IM chatting on Ebuddy mobile
  4. Writing this blog on Opera browser
  5. going on Facebook mobile on Nokia’s default web browser (some issues logging in FB from Opera)

I feel kinda cheated paying 58+36 without maximising e home internet channel. Heck i dun need 6MBPs of bandwidth to go on Facebook and poke pple…so if u are those people who are thinking of getting a mobile data plan, make sure ur reasons r justified.
